Parenting children and teenagers till they become young adults has become a challenging task for many parents. It is regrettable that many parents barely have time to interact with their children. They’re busy building their careers and mainly traveling to make a good life for their children. What many parents fail to understand is that you can’t discipline a child while away. For effective parenting to happen, the parent or guardian should be present both physically and psychologically.
Children born before the 21st century can attest to the caning that was part of discipline. A child in those days in the African culture was of the community, and any member could discipline them. Slowly but surely, the caning has disappeared, and many parents have borrowed from western culture. In some countries like in the west, it is a crime to cane a child. The type of discipline mainly instilled is being grounded. A child is asked to sit in a corner and think through the wrong they have done. Moreover, as the children become teenagers with this grounding, some privileges are taken away from them. For example, they are denied access to electronics, and their curfew time is adjusted.
There is no specific way to parent a child and be positive he/she will turn out as an excellent example in society. Some parenting styles include;
- Disciplinarian-this form of parenting is strict, and punishment is imposed if the child does not follow the rules.
- Permissive,also known as indulgent, is the opposite of strict parents, and here the parents are nurturing and more friendly.
- Uninvolved parenting– as the name precedes it, the parents are less involved with the children’s activities either due to inadequate information or not caring.
Other challenges that parents face maybe a child’s injury during childbirth and childhood. The damage can be mild or severe and cause effects on the mobility and functionality of the child. Birth Injury Justice Center advocates for medical staff’s rights due to negligence or incompetency during and after childbirth. Such centers help in the compensation of the parents by reviewing the cases. They also offer treatment options for childlike therapy sessions.
The centers also educate families and empower them against injuries that might occur during the childbearing process. The most common type of birth injury is head and brain injury. This can have adverse effects on the child’s nervous system depending on the pressure afflicted during delivery. If the conditions are mild, the child stands a risk and may live a healthy everyday life.
Cerebral palsy and Erb’s palsy are conditions caused due to birth injury. The birth injury centers help families know how they can live with their child and advise them on the child’s needs while growing up. Living with a child in today’s society is different from the past as they are more acknowledged. Also, they are allowed to socialize with their peers and even learn with them.
